Choosing and Using Free and Open Source Software: A primer for nonprofits

"Choosing and Using Free and Open Source Software: A Primer for Nonprofits" describes what open source software is and what impact this type of software may have on the nonprofit sector.

Release Date: October 9, 2007

This is an updated version of our old primer, published in 2004.

It includes:

  • case-studies of nonprofits of various sizes that are using open source software,
  • a process for evaluating whether or not open source is right for an organization,
  • a live feed of FOSS Toolkitsfrom Social Source Commons.
  • and useful resources and information.

Written primarily in non-technical language, the Primer is accessible to a wide audience, including nonprofit managers with little hands-on technical expertise.

Translations

Have you considered machine translation? They are getting quite excellent nowdays.

Guys, what is CVS?

Guys, what is CVS?

CVS

@Lisa, CVS is a version control system, used by a lot of open source projects.

Other languages

Hello, your primer seems to be very informative, judging from what I've skimmed of it so far. However, I would like to know if you are planning on translating it into other languages besides Russian, especially Spanish. I would suggest that the organizations that most need Free and Open Source Software are those not based in English-speaking countries. Often, these non-English organizations use pirated software for want of alternatives, and the primer could help them decide whether or not to run FOSS on their computers, but only if they can read the primer in the first place.

Open Source Business Resource

Just wanted to than you again or posting this resource. I saw it most recently included in a Canadian publication promoting open source to businesses. The November issue looks neat.
