Ladainian Tomlinson
: "It's obvious that I
couldn't play. If I could have played, I would have been in
there.'' Chargers RB Tomlinson, who suffered a hyperextended left
knee in last week's win over Indy, got hit on the same knee on the
first play of the AFC Championship Game and said he sprained the
MCL. The Chargers announced he could have returned to the game,
but Tomlinson said that wasn't the case. HC Turner confirmed that
after the game. "It was just the impact of getting hit that first
play, right on it," Tomlinson said. "I thought that would be the
test, taking a hit on it. I don't know how I get direct hits on
it... it's just been two bad weeks for me. I usually don't take
shots like that. It just happened. "Tomlinson was in for a total
of four plays - two carries, a reception and one play where he
stayed into block. He did not play after the Chargers' second
series. "LT tried to go and he just couldn't go," Turner said.
"The pain in the knee, what he felt, he couldn't push off it and
he couldn't go... The doctors and trainers said he couldn't go."

Colts owner Jim Irsay went to bed Sunday night believing coach
Tony Dungy "was leaning" toward coming back for the 2008 season,
but he won't know for sure until Monday morning. "I'm hopeful, I
think he's leaning our way, but he hasn't committed to anything,"
said Irsay, who spoke with his coach on Sunday. Irsay confirmed
that he has signed assistant HC Jim Caldwell to a new contract
with a firm commitment that Caldwell will succeed Dungy if and
when Dungy retires. "Two things that are clear right now: One, if
Tony comes back, he will come back full time and, two, Jim
Caldwell will be the coach if Tony steps down," said Irsay. "I'm
optimistic but I really don't know that Tony will [return]. I can
see him coming back for one, maybe two years, but he has to find
peace with that."

: John Harbaugh was hired by the Ravens today in a
bold move that gives the longtime assistant coach his first head
coaching opportunity. The Ravens will announce the hiring of the
45-year-old Eagles secondary coach, who comes from a football
family, during a news conference at noon tomorrow. Harbaugh has
never been in charge of an offense or a defense in the National
Football League and made a name for himself as a special teams
coach. Harbaugh, considered the dark-horse candidate when the
Ravens' search began, impressed team officials with his intense

Green Bay Press Gazette
: Coach Mike McCarthy didn't take the
Packers into the cold for practice this week, but he tried to
bring some of the cold to them by freezing the footballs they used
in practice. McCarthy said he got the idea from the common NFL
practice of preparing for rain games by dipping the ball in a
bucket of water before each play in practice, something many NFL
teams do occasionally during the season. Instead, McCarthy had the
balls placed in a portable freezer at practice, and on each play
during team drills, the equipment men grabbed a ball from freezer
to try to simulate what it will be like throwing, catching and
handing off the ball Sunday in the NFC championship game at an
arctic-like Lambeau Field. "Didn't tell the players about it and
just rolled them in there on Wednesday and did it throughout the
week," McCarthy said. " The forecast Sunday calls for a high of 5
degrees, low of minus 8 and wind chill of between minus 20 and
minus 30.

Milwaukee
Journal
's Greg A. Bedard reports: There's really nothing
new to report as the Packers do indeed appear to be the healthiest
they've been all season: C Scott Wells (glute) appeared to
practice fully for the first time all week; CB Will Blackmon
(foot) continued to look better and better; LB Nick Barnett
(hamstring) went with no problem; CB Charles Woodson (toe) didn't
appear to be doing a whole lot, but we all know he'll be there on
Sunday.

Green Bay Press Gazette
: Packers Coach Mike McCarthy has agreed to
a new five-year contract worth about $4 million per season but
will wait until after this weekend to sign it, according to an NFL
source familiar with the negotiations. The Packers had been
working on the deal for several weeks and had the parameters set
by last weekend. Negotiations concluded this week, but McCarthy
didn't want the contract to become a distraction prior to Sunday's
NFC championship game, so he will wait until next week to sign it.
The Packers are tearing up McCarthy's original three-year contract
that paid him $2 million per year and ran through the 2008 season.
His new deal runs through the 2012 season and is the same length
as General Manager Ted Thompson's new contract, which was
announced Jan. 7. The average salary for NFL head coaches is
approximately $3.4 million.
